Civil War Medicine Temporary Exhibition

Description:  Explore 1,100 square feet of exhibits about medical practices during the Civil War as seen through the eyes of two local soldiers and one surgeon. The exhibit will include a field hospital as it would have appeared in the midst of battle. This exhibit is sponsored by Heartland Health of St. Joseph, Missouri. Additional funding was provided by a grant from the Missouri Humanities Council.

Description:  Jesse James is a person whose life has inspired legends and rumors for almost 130 years. With that in mind, the St. Joseph Museum has created an exhibit about his life and times that contains images, copies of court documents, and items from the James family to tell his story. Other items show how his death in St. Joseph on April 3, 1882, affected his family and how he has been portrayed since that time.

Description:  New geology, behavioral science, and chemistry experiments are just the beginning as science educators from Missouri Western State University and local high schools present interactive science experiments for children. Reimington Hall has plenty of space for the instructors to provide educational experiences students will long remember. There will be creatures that crawl, objects that sing, and barrels that collapse as children explore the world of science and all it can teach us during this annual science-based children’s event. Super Science Saturday is co-sponsored by the St. Joseph Museums and Missouri Western State University.

Celebrating Community Badge Workshop for Brownie Scouts

Description:  There will be singing, marching, flag fun, games, virtual tours of local landmarks and other activities all geared toward meeting the requirements for the Brownie Celebrating Community Badge. Girls should bring a sack lunch. The Museum will provide drinks, a snack, and the badge. Brownie/adult ratio requirements must be met and registration is required. Troop leaders should send their girls’ registrations and the fee to the St. Joseph Museum, P.O. Box 8096, St. Joseph, Missouri, 64508. The Museum staff will also need the troop leaders’ names and phone numbers in case the date or location must be changed due to weather conditions. Space is limited to 50. "The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases from a State Hospital Attic" Traveling Exhibit

Description:  “The Lives They Left Behind” exhibit was created from the discovery of several hundred suitcases filled with the personal belongings of former patients in the attic of the Willard Psychiatric Center in NY. Their stories and personal belongings illustrate that they had jobs, raised families, were educated and traveled, pursued hobbies, fell in love, and faced misfortune. The exhibit gives a deeper insight into early-mid 20th century psychiatric institutions including the St. Joseph State Hospital, where the Glore Psychiatric Museum originated.

Description:  Experienced Civil War history step-on guide Ross Marshall will take participants on an exploration of area Civil War sites. The trip will include a guided tour of the Anderson House and the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site in Lexington, Missouri. The day will also feature lunch at the Victorian Peddler Tea Room. Description:  A modern, industrialized nation, Italy has an artistic and architectural legacy that few other countries can rival. Dr. Jimmy Albright, archaeologist and professor at MWSU, shares his images from Italy in this exploration of one of Europe’s most complex and alluring destinations. Information on a group trip Dr. Albright will be leading to Italy on October 17 through October 29, 2012, will be available after the program. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Description:  Pella, Iowa, will make you feel like you stepped into the Netherlands with their historic Dutch architecture, beautiful canal plaza, charming tulip gardens, 1850s windmill, and traditional Dutch fare and clothing. This year the trip will also include a guided tour of The Living History Farm in Urbandale, Iowa. The motorcoach will leave from the St. Joseph Museum, 3406 Frederick Ave., at 7:30 a.m. on May 2 and return to the museum at 8:30 p.m. on May 3. The cost of the trip will be $199 for museum members and $219 for non-members. All admission fees, hotel accommodations, motorcoach transportation, step-on guide service, three meals, snacks, and tips are included.

"Clara Barton: The Angel of the Battlefield" Program

Description:  Nicknamed “the angel of the battlefield” by the Civil War soldiers she cared for at Antietam, Clara Harlowe Barton, (1821 – 1912) led quite a life. She overcame the shyness of her childhood to work as a teacher, U.S. Patent Office clerk, and nurse. She lobbied for an American branch of the International Red Cross. When it was founded in 1881 she became its first president. Kay Dunlap, herself a nurse, will be the featured speaker for this program on the amazing accomplishments of Clara Barton.
