Midwest Mental Health Art Show and Sale

Description:  The annual Midwest Mental Health Art Show will be held at the Glore Psychiatric Museum,3406 Frederick Avenue, from June 11 through September 6. This year the temporary for sale exhibit features artwork from artists who are part of the Creativity Group and the History and Techniques Art Group at ReDiscover in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The show will also feature the talent of artists from the Community Alliance facilities in Omaha, Nebraska. Admission: $5 Adults, $4 Seniors, $3 Students

Saddle Up and Ride the Pony Express Trail - Two Day Trip

Description:  Saddle up and ride the Pony Express Trail on a narrated driving tour with stops in Kansas and Nebraska. The exploration of the trail, held in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Pony Express, will take place on September 15 and 16. Sponsored by the St. Joseph Museum, the trip will trace part of the route of Pony Express rider Johnny Fry with stops at Hollenberg Pony Express Station, Rock Creek Station, and Fort Kearny. The Great Platte River Road Archway Museum, which spans Interstate 80, is also included on the trip. The guide will be Jackie Lewin, Executive Director of the St. Joseph Museums and the co-author of On the Winds of Destiny: A Biographical Look at Pony Express Riders. The first stop on the driving tour will be the Hollenberg Pony Express Station and Visitor Center. The afternoon will include a tour of the Rock Creek Station and Visitor Center where participants will enjoy a picnic lunch. After lunch, the group will travel to the Rowe Audubon Sanctuary on the Platte River. That evening, a Pony Express era dinner will be served for the group at the Frank Historic Home in Kearney, Nebraska. The Ramada Inn will be the host hotel. The second day of the trip will begin with breakfast at the hotel before heading to the Fort Kearny State Historical Park. From there the motor coach will travel to the Great Platte River Road Archway, a museum described by the Miami Herald as a “splashy, brassy history museum that uses film, computer graphics, light and sound, life-size dioramas, re-enactors and classic cars to document over 150 years of transportation and communication across America.” Guests will enjoy a barbecue buffet lunch after touring the Archway in the company of a historical re-enactor portraying a famous Pony Express rider. The afternoon’s activities will feature a tour of the Morton House and Arbor Park in Omaha, Nebraska, followed by a Ribeye steak and shrimp buffet dinner at the Lied Lodge at Arbor Park. The motor coach will leave from the St. Joseph Museum, 3406 Frederick Ave., at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, September 15 and return to the museum at 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 16. The cost of the trip will be $260 for museum members and $285 for non-members. The fee includes double occupancy hotel accommodations at the Ramada Inn, luxury motor coach transportation, all admission fees, step-on guide service, all meals, snacks, and tips. Single occupancy hotel accommodations are available for an additional $45. Paid reservations must be made by July 30. Please call 816.232.8471 for more information or to make a reservation.

Description:  The whole family can enjoy a St. Joseph “day-cation” as participating museums from the Museum Association of St. Joseph join in the fifth annual Museum Day, created by Smithsonian magazine. A celebration of culture, learning, and the dissemination of knowledge, Museum Day is a day when museums and cultural institutions nationwide open their doors free of charge.
