58.13.7 These duelling pistols were given to Mahaska Chief of the Iowa by King Philippe of France. Fourteen Iowa Indians traveled with interpreter Jeffrey Deroine from St. Joseph in 1844 where they toured the courts of Europe with George Catlin. The dueling pistols were gifted to Mahaska during this trip. The wooden box with the duelling pistols also contains a wooden mallet, bullet mold, screw driver, an unknown tool packer, and caps. The pistols were donated to the St. Joseph Museum in 1958 by Mrs. Robert Curdy. 11.25" H x 17.25" W
